alarm clockNow this is a question that keeps coming up and the answer is probably as diverse as the people who ask.

Athletes

For the athlete it is essential that your body is at its optimum so you can get the best from it. Also it’s a good idea if you know the time of your event, you can then train the body around that time each day. Our bodies are very good at adapting and will eventually get used to training at a certain time of day. However if the event is generally not time specific then you have a decision to make. When is your body at its most alert to make the most of the training?

scales

This is a subject of deep concern at Government level in many countries and one we need to take very seriously for both our future health and that of future generations.

Being over weight has major health implications. Apart from the extra weight putting physical stress on the muscles and bones, it also puts a lot of stress on our internal organs especially the heart.

Health Problems Happening Now

The result is that we reduce our average life expectancy and are basically speeding up the death process and taking the children along for the ride. The majority of us know the health implications of being over weight, yet we go around with the “it will never happen to me attitude”. Well it will and it is and now we need to do something about it before it’s too late.

The Importance of Stretching

For those of us who don’t exercise, the idea of stretching couldn’t be further from our minds. Even the active amongst us tend to leave stretching for the last minute or just rush it . Sport professionals tend to be a lot better at stretching as they have it drummed into them by their coaches. Why? Because they know if their players don’t stretch they are more likely to pick up an injury and therefore not be eligible for selection.

Avoiding Injuries

Of course the chances of none sport players becoming injured is very unlikely, or is it? We generally won’t suffer from impact injuries in our day to day lives, but twisting, pulling and back pain are all out there waiting to get us when we least expect it. Can we avoid these potential injuries? The answer is not always, however, we give ourselves a much higher chance of an injury-free life if we stretch. The two main contributors to tight and shortened muscles are exercise and a sedentary lifestyle.

 Part 5 of 6

(Check with your doctor before you take on a training regime, especially if you suffer from any illness or are recovering from an injury.  All the tips and advice, unless otherwise stated, presume that you are in good health).  Well, from one large topic straight into another. Exercise for health is a relatively new concept if you look at our time on this planet. In its earliest form exercise was a way of life, it was literally survival of the fittest. There were no stores to buy food they had to chase and catch their food. Through time exercise has developed from a way of life to games, sports and finally gymnasiums. Now our daily lives involve very little exercise. Even some of the most active of us drive to most places and sit in an office for 8 hours a day only to go home to sit down to relax for the rest of the evening. With more of us leading this sort of lifestyle, often under pressure, we need to give greater priority to our health and fitness. Here are a few tips that will help you with your exercise plans.

Part 4 of 6

Well, this is a very large topic that a million and one people have written about. I truly believe that the whole diet subject has been made unnecessarily complicated. If we are honest with ourselves we all know which foods are good for us and which are bad. Our busy lives and often lazy attitude results in bad choices. We spend years putting on the weight and creating an unhealthy body and then expect to be able to lose it in a matter of days through starving ourselves of the nutrients it needs. This is not a healthy habit to get into.
