What is it for?

This exercise trains our good friend the rectus abdominus (the 6 pack, surely you haven’t forgotten? – Beeble) in exactly the same way as the normal crunch does. However adding the pulse really takes it up a level and makes it that bit harder. Making it harder means it works your stomach that bit more and even though it is just a small additional movement you really will feel it. As with the normal crunch it concentrates on the upper section of your abdominals. Now we all want a nice flat toned stomach but use the Crunch and Pulse as a part of an overall program. The exercise by itself will not necessarily give you a flat stomach. You need to reduce the excess body fat that sits on top of your muscles, to do this you will need to combine a good all body workout routine combined with a good wholefood diet. Click on our diet section to learn more on this area.

Diagram showing oblique musclesWhat is it for?

As you can probably guess this exercise works on your stomach muscles, but which ones? It works on your erector spinae muscles (the small muscles either side of your spine – Beeble) which are used for rotation. It also works on your transverse abdominals (the belt-like stomach muscle that lies underneath all other stomach muscles – Beeble) but we have added this to the ab section because it is primarily a great exercise for your oblique stomach muscles (they are on your sides and help with twisting and sideways bending).

Remember though, this exercise and any other stomach exercise will not necessarily make your stomach flat by itself. If you have excess body fat you need to combine your stomach exercises with a good all over body workout and back it up with a good wholefood diet. If you look under the appropriate sections in our blog you should find what you are looking for to help you with this.

abdominal musclesWhat is it for?

This exercise of course works the stomach muscles and is fairly similar to the reverse crunches in the way it works the abdominals. Its main focus is on the transverse abdominals (the belt-like stomach muscle that holds us in at the waist as is responsible for supporting our bodies in all movements – Beeble). It also works the rectus abdominus (your 6 pack – Beeble) better than the majority of other exercises I know. The reason for this is that where the majority of stomach exercises focus on a specific area, and whether they mean to or not, they ignore other areas, this exercise works the 6 pack from the very base all the way to the top. It manages to achieve this by creating pressure lower down in the muscle with the static leg control and focus on the upper portion with the actual crunch movement. This will become more apparent when you watch the video and try it out for yourself.

Transverse AbdominalsWhat is it for?

This will be a very tough exercise for a lot of people and at the same time it is one of the best exercises for your whole stomach. It works mainly on the lower portion of your rectus abdominus (the lower section of your “6 pack” - Beeble) and the transverse abdominals (the belt-like abdominal that gives us protection for our backs – Beeble). If you find that you suffer from a “pot belly,” weak abdominal muscles and/or reverse pelvic tilt (where your pelvis drops at the front and is high at the back, creating an accentuated curve in the spine – Beeble) you will find after time and correct technique this can be a very beneficial exercise for you and help correct your posture.

diagram showing oblique stomach musclesWhat is it for?

This exercise works the abdominals (the stomach muscles – Beeble). It concentrates on the obliques (located at your sides – Beeble) although it does work the whole stomach. The diagram shows where the work is concentrated (shaded in blue – Beeble). This exercise will firm your stomach but will not necessarily make it flat. It all depends on how much body fat you have above the muscle. Treat the body as a whole and you will get the best results. That means a good all over body workout.
