Ham and CheeseAfter reading an article in the Daily Express newspaper printed on our fair British Isles I thought that it would complement my recent post on the “Reverse Diet”. The very talented writer Liz Hazelton has brought to our attention that the perfect breakfast could be ham and cheese with a side helping of cold potatoes (yummy, who needs cereals? Beeble).

Slow Release Foods

The scientific studies that came up with this conclusion have focused on the very popular subject of slow release energy foods. The old glycaemic index has come up again where foods low on this index are said to be more beneficial to us than foods high on the list. Of course this is has been around for a while and we should be aware that our favourite cereals covered in sugar result in an energy boost, but this is then followed by a dip resulting in lack of concentration. Whereas more complex carbs will release the energy more slowly and therefore not create the stage where one needs to snack in order to increase the energy levels again. It allows us to last through to the next meal, supposedly!

SoupSoup

Soup has been around for a long time and the quick packet soups are very popular. Mainly used as an addition to your meal, a nice starter to warm up your stomach juices ready to start digesting the main meal. However this watery feast can be used to help people lose weight. You can literally shed pounds by introducing soup to your daily diet.

How would it work

It works by following some basic nutritional rules. The first is when you start to feel hungry it is not always a signal that you need food, it is also the body’s signal to tell us that we need water. So when you think your body is telling you to eat, it could actually be telling you to rehydrate. As soup is primarily water it is a good way to suppress the hunger feelings as it will help to rehydrate you whilst also containing more nutritional value than water alone. Of course I am talking about good home made soup and not powder “just add water” soup. These soups nutritional benefits are less beneficial.

Jumping Squat muscles usedWhat is it for?

The Jumping Squat is virtually the same as the standard squat. However it is far more intense, uses far more energy and requires a lot more skill. It is a functional movement as it uses the same muscles we use in our day-to-day lives but takes it above and beyond what a normal day may consist of. It is far more functional to the sports person who needs to improve on power in their legs (power is the speed with which you can access your strength – Beeble).

The Reverse Diet

Reverse Diet Cereal BoxWhat is it?

In basic terms this diet consists of reversing what is considered the “norm” of our daily nutritional intake. This means that the normal order of a small breakfast followed by medium to large lunch and finished off with a large dinner is reversed and becomes a large breakfast followed by a medium to large lunch and finished off with a small dinner.

Why?

If you are a regular reader then you will be up-to-date on our opinions of diets and what is healthy. You will also be aware of our mantra that is: “eat for what you are about to do”. Bearing that in mind it should be obvious why the reverse diet has had so many success stories (allegedly, as we take all such reports with a pinch of salt – Beeble).

Spot Training

Spot TrainingWhat is it?

Strictly speaking spot training doesn’t even exist as it is a fable that many people still believe in and follow religiously. It basically states that by training a specific part of your body you can reduce the body fat in that particular area. Unfortunately the world is a cruel place and so is the body and it doesn’t work like that.

The most common example of this is the abdominal muscles, it seems the most desired form is to have a flat tummy and the advice that normally goes with this is that you need to do crunches and sit ups. All lies! Yes you will work the muscle, which in turn will get stronger however the abdominal fat will not reduce.

Why won’t it work?

You have to understand the body first. Every part of you body is connected to another in one way or another and this is why you have to treat it as a whole.
