Ham and CheeseAfter reading an article in the Daily Express newspaper printed on our fair British Isles I thought that it would complement my recent post on the “Reverse Diet”. The very talented writer Liz Hazelton has brought to our attention that the perfect breakfast could be ham and cheese with a side helping of cold potatoes (yummy, who needs cereals? Beeble).

Slow Release Foods

The scientific studies that came up with this conclusion have focused on the very popular subject of slow release energy foods. The old glycaemic index has come up again where foods low on this index are said to be more beneficial to us than foods high on the list. Of course this is has been around for a while and we should be aware that our favourite cereals covered in sugar result in an energy boost, but this is then followed by a dip resulting in lack of concentration. Whereas more complex carbs will release the energy more slowly and therefore not create the stage where one needs to snack in order to increase the energy levels again. It allows us to last through to the next meal, supposedly!

…and The Benefits

However the latest results from this test indicate that foods really low on the GI chart are even better: especially ham and cheese. The benefits of this, they claim, include a better work rate, improved memory and of course a better attention span (eh….what was that? – Beeble). It has also stated that even the old fried breakfast may actually be better for you than first thought (truckers will be very pleased at this news – Beeble). Another study showed that cold potatoes added to your breakfast could help to boost your immune system, reduce the risk of bowl cancer and provide relief for those suffering from this disease.

This kind of scientific testing is great news. It shows that people are actually looking into ways of improving our dietary habits which is much more proactive than just banging on about how obese everyone is. You would have thought people would have realised by now that negative action only breeds negative responses. Most teachers could have told them that. It is also good news for the “Reverse Diet” as I know that it has received some negative responses; but this information can only back up what Tricia Cunnigham (inventor of the “Reverse Diet” - Beeble) has known for many years now. Maybe it is time for us to all change the way we eat and reverse our diets.

Beeble’s Opinion

It is not the first time that this sort of information has come to light, I remember when we were told that red wine is actually good for us, however it doesn’t mean that I want to wash down my morning portion of cold potatoes, ham and cheese with a bottle of Merlot nor would it be healthy to do so.

These tests may not have looked at the picture as a whole. The problem is that most people shouldn’t be eating so much for breakfast that they can last till lunch. Not only will a lot of the nutrients in this type of breakfast get wasted, but it just isn’t convenient. There is nothing wrong with eating food half way down the GI scale and making sure that you have a healthy mid morning snack. In actual fact you will probably find it much healthier this way as the body can utilise more of the nutrients and remember: a lot of healthy foods sit half way on the GI scale (like fruits – Beeble).

The key to healthy eating is variety and healthy food choices. It does make sense to reverse your diet and your eating habits to a certain extent: your meals should set you up for what you are about to do, but I wouldn’t recommend starting your day with this breakfast.

Try it, see how you feel and let us know about it. Good Luck!
