Exercise ClassWhat is it?

A circuit class, like all fitness classes, is designed for one main reason and that is to make exercise more fun and social. Of course if you think this is a chance to sit down and have a chat then you are wrong. However a circuit class can be easily adjusted so it is suitable for beginners through to the super fit and it will be a challenge to all. This type of class is probably one of the most versatile you can have as you can use nearly all forms of exercise that can cover an all over body programme or can be more body part specific. It requires a room of a good size, the great outdoors or it can use a regular gym. Within the circuit there will be several different areas all with a different exercise assigned to them. These are called ’stations’ in the industry. Normally these stations are laid out opposite each other with a gap down the middle and enough space between them so that people don’t bang into each other. See the diagram below for an example layout as viewed from above.

Muscles used in overhead pressWhat is it for?

This exercise primarily trains our deltoid muscles and to be even more precise it focuses on our anterior and medial deltoids (the deltoid muscle is the one that sits on top of your arm on your shoulder. Red in the diagram – Beeble). The secondary muscles it works on are the triceps (back of the arms  (yellow) – Beeble) and the upper trapezius muscle (the muscle that looks like it joins from your neck to your shoulders (yellow) – Beeble). This is not one of my favourite exercises, however there is no doubting its benefits to your strength and the effects this has on your day to day lives.

stilettosBeing a man I can safely say that I have not personally experienced the pain and discomfort that looking good can cause when it comes to the stiletto. Walking for relatively long distances and even standing for long periods in this type of shoe can cause pain in the foot. This is the downside of the stiletto; however it is not what we are looking at today. Today we are going to be looking at the problems the stiletto can cause on your muscles, what this can lead to and finally what can be done to keep these problems at bay.

The problems

The stiletto causes a few problems with muscles both directly and indirectly. The direct muscle affected is the calf muscle (below the knee at the back of your leg – Beeble) the indirect muscles affected can be almost any main muscle in the body due to the way the muscles link together over joints to cause a chain reaction.

Bicep CurlThe Scientific Jargon

Metabolism is the chemical reaction based around the energy that occurs in living cells. There are catabolic reactions that get the energy and there are anabolic reactions that use this energy to construct components of cells like proteins.

This is quite a simplified explanation and scientists will probably be telling me that I need to go into more detail and that the whole process can’t be explained in a couple of lines. However I am not trying to get a Nobel prize and this is a fitness and diet blog, so I am sure that there are many more of you that will be glad that I don’t go into too much detail. Put even more simply: metabolism is based around energy taken in and used within the body to perform basic tasks and cell construction.

Beeble thinkingSo you have decided to get your body into shape and treat it to a bit of controlled torture. This is sometimes a difficult decision but it can be easier to go to a gym than trying to maintain a good training routine at home. Here are a few ideas to help you choose the right gym:

Location

Now, the closer the gym the more likely you are to go to it. The more effort involved in going to the gym, the easier it is to find something else to do. The snob in you may want to choose the upmarket uber expensive gym. However if there is one nearer, then I would advise you to go to that one. I would also recommend that if you find a gym that is close to your home and one that is close to your place of work then go with the one that is closer to work. You see our minds are very easily distracted by so many things at home, so you are also more likely to maintain a good routine if you can go directly from work. It is a good place to get rid of the stresses of the day!
