What is in a Peach?

A PeachThis is another fruit that I have eaten, but I do not have it at the top of my shopping list. It is one of those fruits that not everyone immediately takes to and more often than not we add a nice dollop of cream to take the edge off (of course not too much! – Beeble). Let us have a look at what nutrients make up our peachy friend.

Nutrients are based on 100 grams

  •    Calories: 43.54 kcal
  •    Protein: 1.17 grams
  •    Carbohydrates: 10.59 grams
  •    Fibre: 2 grams
  •    Fat: 0 grams
  •    Calcium: 4.71 milligrams
  •    Phosphorus: 11.77 milligrams
  •    Potassium: 196.56 milligrams
  •    Zinc: 0.12 milligrams
  •    Iron: 0.12 milligrams
  •    Magnesium: 7.06 milligrams
  •    Vitamin A: 54.14 micrograms
  •    Vitamin B1: 0.011 milligrams
  •    Vitamin B2: 0.047 milligrams
  •    Vitamin B3: 0.94 milligrams
  •    Vitamin B6: 0.023 milligrams
  •    Vitamin C: 7.06 milligrams
  •    Vitamin E: 0.7 micrograms
  •    Folate (folic acid): 3.53 micrograms

(The peach has come through as a bit of a weakling – Beeble)

What do these figures mean?

The vitamin C content is around 11% of the USA RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) and whilst that is not as potent as that of the orange and kiwi it still is a good daily contribution to help boost your immune system. It is considered that the peach has a high Vitamin A content however it only contains 6% of the RDA which is a good contributor but certainly nothing to write home about. Vitamin A plays a major role with our vision and a lack of it can result in eye problems like Night Blindness and Corneal Drying.

Why eat a Peach?

I will be honest, I am finding it rather difficult as why you should specifically eat a peach other than it tastes nice and will do you no harm and more importantly will go towards contributing to your daily vitamin and mineral intake. After some searching it can be said that the peach is a diuretic (makes you pee – Beeble), a laxative (I’m not explaining that one – Beeble) and it is also alkaline which could help sooth an acid stomach, however you would have to do a careful balancing act due to its laxative properties. The nutrients that it contains that make it a diuretic also means that it is a good cleansing food for the kidneys and bladder.

Be careful…

As this fruit like many other fruits is a mild laxative it is important that you consume small amounts and don’t gorge yourself too much on them, especially if you are at a dinner party as the resulting embarrassment may result in you never being invited again…

Summary

This fruit is no heavy weight however if you like the taste it is a healthy low calorie and zero fat snack to have. Mind out for the stone in the middle though!
