Set of DumbbellsThere is a misconception in the gym that if you want to lose weight you should stay away from dumbbells and weight machines and if you do use them you must select a weight that you can barely feel and flap your arms about at great speed completing multiple repetitions. Wrong!

Learn how to Box

A BoxerIt doesn’t seem so long ago that my first impression of boxing was….well, shall we say not very complimentary. This was of course before I became a qualified personal trainer and fully understood the mechanics behind the sport. I guess I just pictured two meat heads punching the living day lights out of each other! Then when boxers talked of fitness levels, I would immediately conjure up the image of Rocky running up the steps as he did in the films.

Boxers are Among the Fittest

Of course I know that boxers are one of the fittest athletes out there and I have real respect for them. However it was only after meeting a professional boxer on my training course that truly changed my image of boxers and how their gruelling training regime can be tailored for a fun effective workout for all.

Picture of cranberries and sauceAh! the ever popular cranberry - available as a sauce which is popular world-wide but especially for our American and Canadian friends, as it is an important part of their Thanksgiving menu. Cranberries are one of the few fruits that are native to North America and they are available in the shops from October to December. The other popular method of cranberry consumption is in juice form and it is actually this form that has bought the little cranberry to my attention. Recently in the U.K. there has been an advert for cranberry juice that has appeared more than a few times on my television screen. So I thought today we could take a look at our cranberry friend in its original form.

Picture of a collection of pillsI am often asked which supplements people should take to achieve the results they want. My answer is nearly always the same; "Some supplements do achieve some positive results, however I truly believe that the results attained from the natural food products around us are a far better source". This is what I stand by, although I am sure that there are many of you out there who will argue the point for taking supplements. So to help back up my case I thought you should read this article that I came across at Reuters.com. The article is about two men who have ended up contracting advanced prostate cancer after believing the promises made on the "herbal" supplements they were taking. They commented that the FDA (the USA’s Food and Drug Administration) had little control over the supplement market and the products marked "safe" and "natural" often contain ingredients that very little is known about.
