Just Do It

Nike LogoThe familiar slogan of Nike, the well known giant of the sporting world, is known to us all. Whilst their clothing does not suit everyone they are the main sporting brand that many companies aspire to. Of course I could write for hours on Nike but this is not the focus of this post. No, in fact I want to focus on the very phrase that we associate with Nike but perhaps overlook: “Just Do It”.

Our Problem

How many excuses do you come up with for not spending that little extra time to prepare and cook your own food? How easy is it to put off going to the gym? Don’t think you are on your own, we all have the same problem and that is getting up and spending that extra time required to achieve the goals you so want. Of course in all my wisdom (Ha ha ha – Beeble) I have written previously on how our minds work and how to over come the temptations of the sofa. One I was especially proud of you can read here and also another here. But just because we know how our minds work, I do not necessarily believe that it will naturally make us go to the gym or put in that extra effort. It will allow us to realise why we are doing something, but that is completely different from making us get off our well rounded “behinds” and doing something constructive that will make us healthier, happier and give us more energy.

What shall we do?

Humans are notoriously lazy by nature, always trying to find easier ways to get to the same end result. As the results from healthier eating and exercise are long term it is sometimes difficult to realise the true benefit. Therefore it is much easier to find an excuse not to do something healthy. There are however people that do go to the gym regularly and almost seem addicted to it (not healthy, by the way – Beeble). How did they get to that stage? Do not think for one moment that it was easy for them. I can guarantee that it was far from easy: they had to make some social sacrifices, they had to force themselves into that gym but after a couple of months they came across another human trait and that my friends is called…..habit (or obsession! – Beeble.) Once their new exercise routine became….well, routine, then it no longer became an issue.

The Answer

So the answer has been there all the time, shoved in our faces over the last few decades by the marketing force of Nike. Don’t think about it, don’t debate with yourself whether you should go or not. Set yourself a time, stick to it and “Just Do It!”

I have a friend who is dedicated to fitness. Every morning his alarm goes off at 4am and he’s up out of bed and pedaling up the street or running or swimming. He subscribes to the Nike slogan of “Just Do it” and believes in the whole “Get your exercise out of the way before you start your day” idea.

I feel sluggish in the morning, but from time to time I’ll set my alarm super early with all the best intentions only to hit the snooze button for an hour or so. I hate training in the morning, even though I can see the benefit of getting it out of the way early.

SO tomorrow morning I’ll give it a try – I won’t think about it….I’ll set my alarm an hour before the family is due to rise, and I’ll just do it!

    Great Post
