Muscle diagram of the shin red shows the tibialis anterior muscleDo you enjoy jogging outside or do you prefer the treadmill? Going outside for that run can give you that chance for a little ‘you time’. But do you ever get caught in your stride with a pain in your shins where it becomes slightly numb, you can’t run properly and your feet slap down to the ground and you begin to sound like a wildebeest escaping the jaws of a lion? If the answer is yes then you maybe suffering from Compartment Syndrome or more commonly referred to as Shin Splints.

What are Shin Splints?

Shin Splints is a name given to a group of injuries that can happen to your shin area. Most health professionals will tell you that Shin Splints don’t actually exist because it doesn’t refer to just one complaint, but is the “umbrella” name given to a range of complaints that can occur in the shin area.

Cheesey grin from Hugo the fitness specialistThe last day of the week and whilst aching all over now I am feeling really good about myself. I know you always hear about good endorphins being released and that what gives you the feel-good factor after exercise. However in this case I would disagree as all my good feelings are coming from a sense of achievement. Admittedly it is only the first week of many more to come, but I’m feeling great and that is what counts.

Shoulders and Stomach

Today was shoulders and stomach which is a slightly shorter program than the others of the week. This was a deliberate design by my slave driver of a wife who thought it would make sense to make the last day of the week easier so that I didn’t find an excuse not to do it. So little faith! However I am very grateful as I do tend to look for excuses on a Friday. I pushed hard throughout the routine and really enjoyed it. It is amazing how much more enjoyable exercise is without a hangover!

Hugo with a hangoverToday was back and triceps and it didn’t go very well. I learnt a valuable life lesson and that is if you have an impromptu business meeting the night before don’t have that “one more for the road” drink. I have felt very sorry for myself all day and the training session, though completed, was half-hearted to say the least (That’ll teach you – Beeble).

So weak!

I think the worse exercise of the day for me was the wide grip chin up . I felt like a sack of potatoes and could barely do 6 repetitions. Of course this being the first exercise, it reduced the small amount of self belief I had for the remainder of the workout.

Not all bad news
