Sweat to Lose Weight?

Author: hugo

A very nice couple looking very "cool" in sweat suitsCould you look as good as our couple in their adult romper suits and lose weight at the same time? No no no it doesn’t work like that and here is why.

Lets start from the beginning - What is sweat?

Sweating is a very important function of our body as it helps us to stay cool, this is called perspiration. When you sweat you release a salty liquid from your sweat glands. Some people sweat more than others and this depends on how many sweat glands you have - one is born with about two to four million sweat glands (Stinky!– Beeble).

So this is our natural way to regulate the body’s temperature and we sweat more when we are hot or exercising (or nervous, angry and embarrassed – Beeble).

Then why do I lose weight when I sweat?

Diagram of the Soleus and it's position on your calf muscle. The Gastrocnemius has been cut away to reveal the Soleus underneath. What is the Soleus muscle?

The soleus muscle makes up part of your calf muscle and sits under the main calf muscle called the Gastrocnemius (Gastroc). Its main job is to plantar flex your foot (point your toes down pivoting at the foot – Beeble) as is the job of the Gastroc. The difference comes in when your knees are bent. As the Gastroc works across your ankle joint and your knee joint when your knee is bent, its effectiveness in this position is reduced substantially, but because the Soleus muscle only works across the ankle joint this is where it comes into its own. With the Gastroc out of action the Soleus is the main muscle to plantar flex your foot.

Beeble in science gearHaving fully recovered from the week’s training schedule I was ready for a good shoulder workout today. The weights, as with all shoulder workouts, need to come right down - which is different from when you exercise other muscle groups. This is necessary due to the lack of day-to-day use of these muscles. Basically the shoulders are used to lift items upwards up to and beyond shoulder level. As this is a movement that I do not use regularly during the day it is a particular weak point as it is with the majority of people in non manual jobs.

Today’s Workout

Hugo's training face! The alert among you will notice that today’s exercise is happening a couple of days later than it should be. The reason for this is that you need a rest day between day 2 and day 3. “But you had two days rest” I hear you cry! True, and now I have a piece of advice: on your rest day do not decide to cycle 40 miles however nice the weather is, especially after quite an intense leg workout the day before. So really I only had one day off exercise as I could barely do anything as my butt was saddle sore. Why do they make saddles as thin as a credit card? (Take a cushion next time - Beeble)

Hugo suffering from the pains of a good leg workoutToday I am feeling a little worse for wear from the rather intensive chest and biceps workout of yesterday. This did not prevent me from entering the gym this morning with a defiant look on my face ready to take on my leg workout routine. I am particularly determined this week as I have a nagging thought in the back of my mind that there is only one more month to go of the experiment and whilst the progress is good there is still along way to go.

Meeting old friends

There are some exercises in today’s program that are like meeting old friends. Exercises that I have used in the past but have not had in my repertoire for some time. So, yes it was good to see them again. However I don’t think my legs would now agree as I hobble from one room to the next like a cowboy with saddle sores (not a pretty sight – Beeble). Still it all goes towards progress and it means that the program pushes me hard enough.
