When it comes to exercises for the soleus muscles it is really quite dull. You can only properly train them if you bend your knees to 90 degrees. By doing this you stop the main calf muscle (gastrocnemius) from functioning and therefore it is down to the soleus to do the work. So really the seated position is the best and as you can probably imagine there really are not many exercises to target the soleus. As with the exercise that I wrote about it placed the weight across the knees and that is what you will need to do. So whether you use the quad extension machine, barbell, weight plates(discs), dumbbells or a weight of other sorts across the knees it still is a case of going onto tiptoes from that seated position. Using a small step allows for a larger range of movement which is preferable.

I know a rather boring answer but I hope it helps. Good luck with your training and if you want ideas and training tips for other exercises please visit our sister site http://beeblefitness.com/exercises/

This advice has been great-the gains have been wonderful, and keeping the reps and weights varied is helping me to continue building without significant plateau.

going from small, weedy calves to an increased defined mass has really benefitted my rugby.

Thanks for the tips!

Brilliant! I'll definitely try exercise num 2 next time I'm in the gym. Have been looking for a good way to train my soleus muscle because my gym doesn't have a seated calf machine.

Hi Aussie,

Good exercise but it does focus on the Gastrocnemius this way. To take the Gastrocnemius out and to focus on your Soleus muscle you have to bend at the knee. So your exercise will work if you do the same but in a seated position with your knees bent at 90 degrees. The only problem with that, though, is that it is difficult to keep good form and near on impossible to add weight :)
